A good stroller is one of the biggest single purchases on a newborn checklist, and also one of the shortest-used. Most babies are out of their first stroller within 12–18 months. 1. The frame and folding mechanism
Open and close the stroller a few times. It should fold smoothly without sticking, and lock securely when open — a wobbly lock is a safety issue, not just an annoyance. Look for cracks or rust near the joints, especially on strollers that have seen monsoon use.
2. Wheels and suspension
Spin each wheel. It should turn freely without grinding. Uneven wear usually means the stroller was used on rough pavement a lot — not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.
3. The harness and buckle
This is non-negotiable. The 5-point harness should click firmly and release only when you press the intended button — not from a light tug. If a harness feels loose or the buckle sticks, that stroller shouldn't be listed.
4. Fabric and padding
Sun exposure and spills are normal on a used stroller. What matters is that the fabric isn't torn where it takes weight (seat base, straps) and that it's been properly cleaned — not just wiped down.
5. Brakes
Engage the parking brake and give the stroller a gentle push. It shouldn't roll. This is one of the most overlooked checks in second-hand listings, and one of the most important.
